Purpose

This policy establishes the definition of a credit hour at Roosevelt International University of Baptist and ensures consistency in academic workload, instructional time, and learning outcomes across all academic programs.

Definition of a Credit Hour

A credit hour represents a reasonable amount of academic work equivalent to:

  • One hour (50 minutes) of direct faculty instruction per week.
  • A minimum of two hours of student work outside the classroom each week.
  • Conducted over approximately 15 weeks, or an equivalent instructional period.

This definition applies to all delivery formats including on-campus, online, hybrid, and distance learning programs.

Modes of Instruction

  • Lecture-Based Courses: One hour of faculty-led instruction per week, plus two hours of student preparation, reading, and assignments.
  • Laboratory / Practical Work: Two to three hours per week of supervised laboratory or practical work, along with additional academic preparation.
  • Discussion-Based / Seminar Courses: One hour of group discussion per week, supplemented by independent research and study.
  • Online / Distance Learning: Equivalent instructional time through lectures, learning modules, discussions, assessments, and student engagement comparable to face-to-face courses.

Academic Term Length

A standard academic term consists of approximately 15 instructional weeks, excluding final examinations. Intensive or accelerated courses must meet the same total instructional time and learning objectives.

Responsibility of Credit Assignment

  • Ensuring courses meet the defined credit hour standards.
  • Establishing appropriate academic workload and learning activities.
  • Maintaining records of instructional hours and academic quality standards.

Monitoring and Compliance

The Academic Affairs Office regularly reviews course syllabi, learning outcomes, instructional hours, and student workload to ensure compliance with this Credit Hour Policy.
